Patricia Jung is an artist and spiritual person, raised and living in Toronto’s Chinatown and Kensington Market area. In her airbrush painting practice, Patricia focuses on combining Eastern and Western elements, to reflect her cultural experience as a first generation Chinese-Canadian person in Canada.

 

Patricia artistically explores colour, motion, text and the subtle application of gold-leaf. Used historically as a mending method, Japanese gold-leaf is applied as a way to honour the history of the object, and its journey through the world. For Patricia, the gold-leaf technique and her thoughtful colour applications emanate her belief in art as a tool for emotional healing. By introducing Chinese calligraphy into her work, Patricia also makes reference to her family’s experience (specifically her grandfather, who was a Chinese calligraphy instructor) and makes the statement, “we are still here.” 

 

Patricia’s spirituality and artistic practice are deeply entwined, and she hosts exhibitions and runs community-based painting workshops through the Chinese Presbyterian Church, and within the Kensington Market neighbourhood. Patricia is currently completing work to show in public spaces around Toronto, to connect and share more with the community.
